Picking a size for your group
- Six on a regular basis. The 6 Person Cube in its 6x6x6 or 6x7x6 size, the XL Barrel, or the Small Timberline. The cube has a boxy room, the barrel has the classic round profile, and the Timberline adds a sloped roof and two bench levels.
- Eight at a time. The Large Timberline lists 8 seats, and the XL Barrel lists 6 to 8. The porch add-on gives the XL a covered spot at the door.
- Ten or more. Go to the fully built cabins: the Teton (5x6 to 8x10) seats 4 to 10, and the Blackwood 8x15 seats 12 to 14 with its own changing room.
Size it for a normal week at your place, not the biggest party you can picture. A bigger room is a bigger footprint and base, and it takes longer to come up to temperature. Still unsure? Which sauna fits me and the family sauna guide narrow it down.

Heaters for a bigger room
The XL Barrel, 6 Person Cube, and Timberline product pages list 175-230°F for the included heater; plan on heat-up time, with the size of the room making the difference. See how hot an outdoor sauna gets. On the large kits, the heater lists on each product page include:
- Timberline: on the electric side, a Harvia KIP 8kW with a dial, or a Spirit 9kW, Virta 10.5kW, or Club 12.5kW, all three with WiFi. The wood choice is the Harvia M3.
- XL Barrel: Harvia KIP 8kW (dial or WiFi), Harvia Spirit 9kW WiFi, a Huum WiFi heater, or the Harvia M3.
- 6 Person Cube: Harvia KIP 8kW (built-in controls or WiFi), Harvia Spirit 9kW WiFi, or a Huum 9kW Drop with WiFi. Wood or gas heat is available on request. Gas and propane heaters are available by request: call, text or message us to set it up.
We suggest electric first, wired to a dedicated circuit by a licensed electrician. Of the larger builds, the XL Barrel and Timberline list a wood-burning heater, the Teton and Blackwood can be built with one, wood on the 6 Person Cube is available on request (ask us), and we also build dual-heater saunas with wood and electric. Smoke and burning rules vary from place to place, so check your local rules and ask us before you settle on wood. Gas and propane heaters are available by request: call, text or message us to set it up. More: Electric vs wood-burning · WiFi heaters · Heater sizing.
Kit or fully built
The XL Barrel, 6 Person Cube, and Timberline are kits. Their walls are 1 5/8" Sugi cedar, and we fasten them with stainless steel screws instead of glue. Kits take about 4-5 weeks to build, then 5-10 business days in transit, and they ship free in the contiguous U.S. Most customers assemble it themselves, and with a big kit, plan on a second set of hands. Professional assembly is optional at $1,250 for kit models, separate from the sale.
The Teton and Blackwood leave our shop as finished, insulated cabins with natural wool insulation, a foil vapor barrier, and waterproof flooring. The interior is Sugi cedar, Thermo Spruce, or Thermo Aspen, and the siding is chosen for each build. The Teton has a tempered glass front wall. The Blackwood pairs the sauna room with a private changing room and offers covered deck and extended roof-overhang options. Neither needs assembly. Their shipping is quoted for your location, including crane placement if your site needs it, and lead time is confirmed with your quote. More on the custom side: Custom sauna builds.
Base, power, and placement
A larger sauna needs a level, prepared base sized to its footprint, so measure from the product page before you pour or build anything. Plan the electrical run with your electrician early, since a larger room usually takes a larger heater. Then check your local rules on zoning, setbacks, permits, and the electrical work, and get HOA approval in writing if you have one. Guides: Foundation and electrical · Permits and HOA.
