Modern Outdoor Saunas: Cubes, Pods and Glass-Front Cabins

Short answer: for a modern look, start with our cubes, pods, the sloped-roof Timberline, or the glass-front Teton. Every kit model has a black metal roof option on its product page, and select heaters can be run over WiFi. Kits ship free in the contiguous U.S., and the Teton arrives fully built with quoted shipping. Call (208) 520-6612 · (208) 270-5860.

Which shapes read as modern

  • Cubes. Straight walls and a boxy, room-like shape. The 4 Person Cube seats 4, and the 6 Person Cube comes as a 6x6x6, 6x7x6, or 7x7x7, each seating 6.
  • Pods. A compact footprint with a clean outline. Pick the Pod Mini for one, the 2 Person Pod for two, or the 4 Person Pod for four. The Pod Mini can also go indoors without the roof kit.
  • Timberline. A sloped roof over two bench levels. The Timberline comes Small (seats 6) or Large (seats 8).
  • Teton. A fully built, insulated cabin with a tempered glass front wall, in sizes from 5x6 to 8x10. See the Teton.
  • Blackwood. A fully built cabin with a sauna room and a private changing room under one roof, in 8x10 or 8x15. See The Blackwood.

If you like the traditional round profile instead, the barrels are the classic choice. Shape-by-shape notes: Barrel vs pod vs cube · Cube vs barrel.

Roof, glass, and light

  • Black metal roof. Every kit product page lists a black metal roof or roof kit, which gives the cedar a dark, crisp top line. The Pod Mini lists it for outdoor use. More: Black metal roof saunas.
  • Glass. The 4 Person Barrel offers an optional panoramic window. The Teton has a tempered glass front wall. The Blackwood lists tempered, double-pane insulated windows and a tempered-glass sauna door, with window, door, bench, and room layouts you can customize. Doors and hardware: Sauna glass doors.
  • Lighting and finishes. The Blackwood lists under-bench LED lighting, exterior lighting, and covered deck and extended roof-overhang options. On the Teton and Blackwood, the siding is chosen per build, and the interior is Sugi cedar, Thermo Spruce, or Thermo Aspen.

Controls you can run from your phone

Select heaters offer WiFi control. Depending on the model, the product pages list the Harvia KIP with WiFi, the Harvia Spirit WiFi, Huum WiFi heaters, and on the Timberline, the Harvia Virta and Harvia Club WiFi heaters. Dial and built-in control versions are listed too. On our pods, cubes, and Timberline, the room is listed to reach 175-230°F, depending on its size. See the sauna temperature guide. Electric is where we suggest you start, with a licensed electrician running the circuit. A wood-burning heater is also offered on the Teton, Blackwood, Timberline, XL Barrel, and 4 Person Barrel, and on the 6 Person Cube on request (not on pods), and we can build a sauna with both wood and electric. Rules on smoke and burning differ by city and county, so check your local rules and ask us before choosing wood. Gas and propane heaters are available by request: call, text or message us to set it up.

Placing a modern sauna at your home

A clean-lined sauna looks most at home when it lines up with something already there: the edge of a patio, a fence line, or a wall of the house. Leave room to walk around all four sides, keep the base level and well drained, and think about the view from your windows and from the bench. Our general base and power notes are in Foundation and electrical. Check your local rules on zoning, setbacks, permits, and electrical work, and get any HOA approval in writing before you order. Guide: Permits and HOA.
