How Hot Does an Outdoor Sauna Get?

Short answer: the heater included with our pods, cubes, 2 Person Barrel, XL Barrel, and Timberline is listed to reach 175-230°F. Where yours settles in that range depends on the size of the sauna, the heater you choose, the model, and the weather outside. These are traditional saunas with hot-rock heaters, not infrared. What decides how hot your sauna runs

The product pages for our pods, cubes, 2 Person Barrel, XL Barrel, and Timberline list 175-230°F for the heater that comes with the sauna. The 4 Person Barrel, Teton, and Blackwood pages do not give a range, so ask us about those. Four things move you around inside it:

  • Room size. A Pod Mini for one and a Large Timberline for eight are very different volumes of air to warm.
  • The heater. Each model lists its own heater choices, sized for that cabin (see the table below).
  • The model. Kits have 1 5/8" Sugi cedar walls. The Teton and Blackwood are insulated cabins, built with natural wool insulation and a foil vapor barrier.
  • Conditions outside. A cold night asks more of any heater than a mild evening does.

The top of the range is a ceiling, not a target. You pick the setting on the heater's controls, and you can run it lower whenever you like.

Setting the temperature from the bench or your phone

The Harvia KIP comes with a dial or built-in controls on the heater itself. If you would rather start the sauna before you walk outside, pick one of the WiFi heaters: the KIP WiFi, the Spirit, the Huum Drop or Steel Mini, or the Virta and Club on the Timberline. WiFi is offered on select heaters, so check the list for your model. More on how the app side works: WiFi sauna heaters.

A sauna thermometer shows what the room is actually reading. We carry a black sauna thermometer if your build does not have one yet.

Why the same temperature can feel different: stones and löyly

Our heaters warm a bed of sauna stones, and the stones heat the room. Ladle a little water over the hot stones and you get löyly, a quick puff of steam that lifts the humidity for a moment and makes the heat feel fuller. Go slowly with the water, a small scoop at a time. A wooden bucket and ladle set makes it easy, and our guide to sauna stones and löyly goes deeper.

Wood heat and electric heat

We suggest electric first, wired to a dedicated circuit by a licensed electrician. The Harvia M3 wood-burning heater is offered on the 4 Person Barrel, XL Barrel, and Timberline, the Teton and Blackwood can be built for wood heat as well, and the 6 Person Cube can have it on request. Pods are electric. With wood, you manage the heat by tending the fire. We also build dual-heater saunas with both wood and electric. Check your local rules and ask us before you choose wood. Frequently asked questions

How hot does an outdoor sauna get?

Our pods, cubes, 2 Person Barrel, XL Barrel, and Timberline list 175-230°F for the heater that comes with them. Room size, the heater, the model, and the weather outside decide where yours lands. Call (208) 520-6612 or (208) 270-5860 to talk through heater choices.

Do I have to run the sauna at the top of its range?

No. You set the temperature on the heater's controls. Where a product page lists 175-230°F, that is what the included heater can reach, and you can keep it lower whenever you want.

Can I control the sauna temperature from my phone?

Yes, with a WiFi heater. The KIP WiFi, Spirit, Huum Drop, Huum Steel Mini, Virta, and Club options are WiFi models, and which ones you can pick depends on the sauna.

Does a wood-burning sauna get as hot as an electric one?

The Harvia M3 is a heater option on the 4 Person Barrel, XL Barrel, and Timberline (the Teton and Blackwood can have wood heat too, and the 6 Person Cube on request; ask us), and the XL Barrel and Timberline pages give 175-230°F for the included heater. With wood, the fire sets the pace. Check your local rules and ask us before choosing wood.

Is a Blazin sauna an infrared sauna?

No. We build traditional saunas that heat the room with a hot-rock heater, and we do not sell infrared kits. See barrel sauna vs infrared for the comparison.

Why does pouring water on the stones make it feel hotter?

Water on hot stones turns into a brief burst of steam called löyly. The humidity rises for a moment, and that makes the same heat feel stronger.
