Traditional outdoor sauna heat isn’t just “hot air.” The heater warms a bed of stones; you sit in dry high heat, then, when you want it, ladle a little water onto the rocks for löyly: a soft burst of steam that raises humidity and makes the heat feel fuller. Understanding stones and löyly helps you shop heaters, accessories, and cabin size with fewer surprises.
Blazin Saunas builds handcrafted outdoor cabins in East Idaho from Sugi cedar (not Western Red Cedar). Pods, barrels, cubes, and Timberline have 1 5/8" thick Sugi cedar walls. Teton and Blackwood are insulated cabins. Pods, barrels, cubes, and Timberline ship free to the contiguous U.S.; Teton and Blackwood arrive fully built with delivery quoted. What sauna stones actually do
Stones are a thermal battery. The heater element (electric) or firebox (wood-burning) transfers energy into the rock mass. That mass then radiates steady heat into the room and gives you a safe surface for water, without dumping liquid straight onto live elements or fire.
- Heat storage: Thick, dense stones hold temperature so the cabin doesn’t feel spiky every time the heater cycles
- Löyly surface: Water hits rock, flashes to steam, and humidity rises briefly
- Even feel: A properly filled stone basket softens the difference between “heater blast” and bench-level comfort
Stones work with your heater, not in place of it. Heater guide: Harvia heater sizing for barrel (and cabin) saunas.
Löyly basics (without overdoing it)
Löyly is optional and personal. Some sessions stay dry and very hot; others add a ladle or two for that classic soft hit. A few practical rules:
- Use clean water only: No oils, essential-oil concentrates, or additives on the stones unless the heater maker explicitly allows a safe method elsewhere
- Small ladles, not buckets: Too much water cools the top stones and can stress the heater; build humidity gradually
- Wait for hot rocks: Cold stones + water = dull steam and wet floors, not good löyly
- Respect clearances and instructions: Follow the heater manual for stone type, fill height, and maintenance
Bucket, ladle, and thermometer make the ritual safer and more repeatable: our wooden sauna bucket and ladle set and black sauna thermometer. See our Accessories checklist and the Accessories collection.
Stone type, size, and fill (confirm with the heater product page)
Most electric and wood packages specify olivine, peridotite, or similar sauna stone grades sized for that basket. Don’t improvise with river rock, landscaping stone, or porous decorative rock. They can crack, spit, or hold moisture badly.
- Fill to the maker’s line: Underfilled baskets run uneven; overpacked baskets can block airflow around elements
- Leave gaps for air: Stack so heat and steam can move; don’t cement stones into a solid plug
- Inspect periodically: Cracked or crumbling stones should be replaced; keep spare bags if you löyly often
Stone kits and what’s included vary by heater package, so check the product page for your heater in Heaters. These heater pages list sauna stones in the package: Harvia KIP dial, Harvia KIP WiFi, Harvia Spirit WiFi, Huum Drop WiFi, and the Harvia M3 wood-burning stove. KIP or Spirit? See Harvia KIP vs Spirit.
Electric vs wood: how stones feel different
Both paths use stones; the ritual around them differs.
- Electric: Predictable ramp, thermostat or WiFi start, stones heated by elements. Great for weeknight consistency. Compare control styles and fuel paths in Electric vs wood-burning sauna heater.
- Wood-burning: Fire-fed heat, more hands-on timing, chimney and clearance planning. Stones still store and deliver löyly; the “wait for ready” cue is visual and sensory as much as a dial.
Neither path is infrared panel heat. Blazin Saunas focuses on traditional hot-room outdoor cabins. Confirm the heater package on the sauna product page, not a generic infrared claim.
Cabin design still matters
Stones and löyly shine when the room holds heat: solid Sugi cedar walls (1 5/8" on pods, barrels, cubes, and Timberline; Teton and Blackwood are insulated cabins), a sensible roof package, and the heater listed for your model. Site prep (pad + electrical for electric heaters) is the same conversation as always: Foundation & Electrical. Optional professional assembly is $1,250 for pods, barrels, cubes, and Timberline.
Day-one setup checklist

Frequently asked questions
What is löyly?
Löyly is the burst of steam you get when you ladle a little water onto hot sauna stones. It raises humidity for a moment and makes the heat feel fuller. It is optional.
Do Blazin heater packages come with stones?
Yes for these heater product pages: the Harvia KIP (dial and WiFi), Harvia Spirit WiFi, Huum Drop WiFi, and Harvia M3 wood-burning packages list sauna stones as included. Check the product page for your heater.
Can I use river rock or landscaping stone?
No. Use sauna stones made for heaters. River rock, landscaping stone, and porous decorative rock can crack, spit, or hold moisture badly.
How much water should I ladle?
Small ladles, not buckets. Wait until the stones are fully hot, then add a ladle at a time. Too much water cools the top stones and can stress the heater.
Can I put essential oils on the stones?
Use clean water only on the stones, unless your heater maker explicitly allows a safe method elsewhere. Follow your heater manual.
What accessories do I need for löyly?
A bucket and ladle and a thermometer make it repeatable. We carry a wooden sauna bucket and ladle set and a black sauna thermometer in Accessories.
