Choosing the spot on open land
With room to spare, it is tempting to put the sauna far out with the view. Before you do, weigh it against a few practical things. These are general pointers, not rules for your property:
- Distance from the house. Every extra yard is more trench for power and a longer walk in bad weather. Somewhere between the back door and the view is often the easier compromise.
- Wind. Open ground is exposed. A barn wall, shop, or row of trees upwind gives the door and the cedar some shelter.
- Water. Choose the highest, firmest ground nearby, away from low spots, ditches, and anywhere runoff collects.
- Work traffic. Keep the sauna clear of where trucks and equipment turn, and fence it off if animals graze close by.
Whatever spot you pick, build a level, prepared base for it first. Base and power notes: Foundation and electrical.
Running power, or choosing wood
An electric heater runs on a dedicated circuit, and on a rural property that circuit may come from the house, a shop, or another panel. Your licensed electrician decides the route and the wire for the distance. Select heaters offer WiFi control.
If a long power run doesn't make sense, look at the wood-burning Harvia M3, a heater choice on the 4 Person Barrel, XL Barrel, and Timberline, and the Teton, Blackwood, and 6 Person Cube (on request) can take wood heat too. We also build dual-heater saunas that combine wood and electric. Still, start from electric where you can: rules on burning and smoke vary by county and town, so check your local rules and ask us before choosing wood. Gas and propane heaters are available by request: call, text or message us to set it up. Where a product page lists it, expect 175-230°F inside. Compare: Electric vs wood-burning.

Kit or finished cabin
For the kits, we cut 1 5/8" Sugi cedar walls and assemble the joinery with stainless steel screws, never glue. Kits take about 4-5 weeks to build, then 5-10 business days in transit, with free shipping in the contiguous U.S. DIY instructions come with each kit, and most customers assemble it themselves. Professional assembly is optional at $1,250 for kit models, separate from the sale; for remote ranch addresses, ask us about availability.
The Teton and Blackwood arrive as finished, insulated cabins, so there is nothing to assemble. The interior is Sugi cedar, Thermo Spruce, or Thermo Aspen, and the siding is chosen per build. We quote their shipping for your location, including crane placement if your site needs it, and confirm lead time with your quote. On the phone, tell us about the route from the road to the spot so the quote fits your property. More: Delivery and lead times · What free shipping includes.
Weather and upkeep in the open
Open country gets the full sun, wind, rain, and snow. Keep open air around every side so the cedar dries out after rain or snow, clear drifts and debris off the roof, and look over the base and the door each season. Care guide: Cedar sauna maintenance · Cold-climate saunas.
County rules and covenants
Being outside city limits does not mean there are no rules. Check your local rules on zoning, setbacks, permits, and the electrical work with your county, and read any covenants on the land. Our Permits and HOA guide has questions to bring.
Sale, payment, and warranty
Pods, barrels, cubes, and the Timberline are $1,250 off regular price until we are booked up; the Teton and Blackwood are regular price. Pay in full, pay monthly through Affirm, or use HSA/FSA funds if you may qualify through TrueMed. The 3-year limited warranty covers home, rental, and commercial use, including saunas bought through an authorized dealer. All sales are final. Each sauna is handmade for your order in East Idaho. Defects are covered by our 3-year warranty. Guest ranches and rentals can schedule a call about dealer and wholesale pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Do you ship saunas to ranches and rural addresses?
Yes. Pods, barrels, cubes, and the Timberline ship free in the contiguous U.S., and Teton and Blackwood shipping is quoted for your location. Call (208) 520-6612 or (208) 270-5860.
What size sauna fits a ranch or farm?
Size it to the group in the sauna at one time. Our 4 Person Barrel, 4 Person Pod, and 4 Person Cube suit a household. For a crew or guests, the XL Barrel seats 6 to 8, the Timberline seats 6 Small or 8 Large, and the Teton (5x6 to 8x10) seats 4 to 10.
How far from the house can the sauna go?
That mostly depends on power. An electric heater needs a dedicated circuit, so your licensed electrician sets the practical distance. Wood heat is the other route on several models, subject to your local rules.
Which saunas offer wood heat?
Three kits list the Harvia M3 wood stove as a heater choice (4 Person Barrel, XL Barrel, Timberline). The Teton and Blackwood can be built for wood, the 6 Person Cube can be too on request, and dual-heater saunas are another option. Check your local rules and ask us before choosing wood.
Is professional assembly available in rural areas?
Optional professional assembly costs $1,250 for kit models and is separate from the sale. For remote properties, ask us about availability. The Teton and Blackwood arrive fully built.
Do I need a permit outside city limits?
Possibly. Check your local rules on zoning, setbacks, permits, and electrical work with your county, and read any covenants on the property.
