Handmade Outdoor Saunas in Arizona

Short answer: Blazin Saunas ships handmade outdoor saunas to Arizona, from Phoenix-area backyards to snowy lots around Flagstaff. Every sauna is built for your order by our team of six in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Pods, barrels, cubes, and the Timberline ship free in the contiguous U.S., and The Blazin Teton Sauna and The Blackwood arrive fully built with shipping quoted.

Arizona is really two sauna markets. Here is how the desert and the high country change the plan.

Town notes: Scottsdale · Paradise Valley

Desert heat and mountain snow

The spread is wide. The low desert around Phoenix has very hot summers, while Flagstaff and the high country up north get cold, snowy winters.

  • In the low desert, the sun is the main thing to plan around. Strong sun ages a cedar exterior faster, so shade from a wall, tree, or pergola on the west side helps. Monsoon storms can drop a lot of water fast, so set the cabin on a level base that drains. Care tips: Cedar sauna maintenance.
  • In Flagstaff, Prescott, and the White Mountains, plan for snow. Keep the roof and the path to the door clear after storms, and ask your building department what snow load applies to your lot. More: Cold-climate saunas and Black metal roof.

Blazin does not publish snow-load ratings or R-values for its saunas.

Heat source: start with electric

For most Arizona backyards, an electric heater is the simplest place to start. Rules on wood smoke and burning vary by city and county, so check your local rules before you think about wood.

We do not claim a wood-burning sauna heater is allowed or approved anywhere in Arizona. Choose an electric heater for most Arizona installs, check your local rules if you are thinking about wood, and ask us about your address. Gas and propane heaters are available by request: call, text or message us to set it up. Our pods, cubes, 2 Person Barrel, XL Barrel, and Timberline list 175-230°F for the included heater. Compare options in Electric vs wood-burning heaters.

Permits, HOAs, and planned communities

If your home is in a planned community with design review, start with the HOA. After that, your city or county building department decides whether the sauna and its electrical circuit need permits. An electric heater needs a licensed electrician.

Get the HOA's written approval and confirm zoning, setbacks, and permits with your city or county before ordering. Bring the product page dimensions and photos to that conversation. The Permits and HOA guide has a question list.

How the cabin is built

Kit models are framed from 1 5/8" Sugi cedar, fastened with stainless screws, and glue-free in the joinery. The Teton and Blackwood are insulated cabins with a Sugi cedar, Thermo Spruce, or Thermo Aspen interior, and their siding is chosen per build. Why Sugi: Sugi vs Western Red Cedar. How it goes together: Clean build, no glue.

Models for Arizona homes

Pods, barrels, cubes, and the Timberline are $1,250 off regular price until we are booked up; the Teton and Blackwood are regular price. Help choosing: Size guide · Barrel vs pod vs cube · Buying guide.

Getting it to Arizona

Kits are built in about 4-5 weeks, then spend 5-10 business days in transit, and shipping to Arizona is free. Most customers put the kit together themselves, ideally on a cooler morning. For pods, barrels, cubes, and the Timberline, professional assembly is optional at $1,250 from our nationwide assembly team, separate from the sale. The Teton and Blackwood come fully built with nothing to assemble; we quote shipping by location and crane needs and confirm lead time with your quote. Rules for backyard structures are set by your city or county, so check local rules and ask us before you order.

Scottsdale: desert seasons and ESL lots

NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Scottsdale Municipal Airport (station USW00003192) put the average January low at 43.4°F and the high at 66.5°F. July averages 104.1°F by day and 82.6°F at night, with about 93 days a year at 100°F or hotter and 8.73 inches of precipitation in a normal year (NOAA U.S. Climate Normals). October through April is the easy season; in summer, plan sessions for early morning.

  • ESL areas. The City's Environmentally Sensitive Lands overlay covers the desert and mountain areas north and east of the Central Arizona Project canal, and requires part of each lot to stay as Natural Area Open Space (NAOS), preserved in its natural state. Find your NAOS boundary before you pick a spot.
  • Accessory structures. The City publishes guidance for sheds, pergolas, and other detached structures, and some subdivisions have amended standards. Ask the City and your HOA about placement and setbacks, and whether the sauna and its circuit need a permit.
  • No Burn Days. When Maricopa County declares a No Burn Day, burning anything but gas in a fireplace, woodstove, or chiminea is prohibited. Ask the county how that applies to a sauna stove. Pods run on electric or gas, never wood.
  • Pool yards. Pool pumps and air conditioning already draw on the panel, so have a licensed electrician check capacity, and keep a dry path between the pool and the sauna door.

Cool-season use. December is the coldest month at the airport station, with a normal low of 42.5°F. About 11 December nights and 9 or 10 January nights drop below 40°F, while freezing nights are rare, about 3 in a normal year.

Getting it into the yard. Pods, barrels, cubes, and the Timberline ship free in the lower 48 states as kits. Kits have a 4–5 week lead time. The Teton, Blackwood, and Timberline Lux arrive fully built, with shipping quoted (crane placement included) and lead time confirmed with the quote. On an ESL lot, ask the City before any truck or crane crosses NAOS ground. Orders to Hawaii and Alaska are quoted too.

Models for Scottsdale yards. For two, the 2 Person Pod (electric or gas) or the 2 Person Barrel. For a family, the 4 Person Cube seats 4, and the Timberline seats 6 or 8 depending on size. Wood heat is an option on barrels, cubes, and the Timberline; check No Burn Day rules first. Pods, barrels, cubes, and the Timberline show $1,250 OFF on their product pages today; the Teton, Blackwood, and Timberline Lux are regular price.

Paradise Valley: washes, floor area, and hillsides

The Town shares the Scottsdale airport station, roughly 7 miles north of Town Hall, so the winter and summer numbers above apply. Southwest National Weather Service offices define the monsoon as June 15 through September 30, with strong wind, dust storms, and flash flooding (NWS monsoon safety), so keep the pad out of washes and low spots.

The Town's building permit application information lists several items that bear on a backyard sauna:

  • Accessory structure applications need a topographic plan or a letter stating the structure will not sit in a wash, retention basin, or drainage easement.
  • Area under roof in accessory buildings, eaves included, counts toward a floor area total of 25% of the lot (R-10 zoning excepted). A shade ramada counts too.
  • All accessory buildings together cannot exceed 50% of the main residence's ground area.
  • If the building site slope is 10% or more, the Town asks you to talk with its Hillside Planner and go through Hillside Committee Review before applying.

Ask the Town's Building Safety Department which electrical permit applies to a new heater circuit, and check with your HOA. Gated entries, long drives, and grade changes shape the shipping quote for a fully built Teton or Blackwood, so send photos early.

Winter and access. The same normals show December through February bringing about 3.3 inches of precipitation over roughly 13 wet days, so a cool, mostly dry winter is the season to plan for. On a hillside lot, a kit can be hand-carried from the drive. If a fully built model needs a crane, ask the Town whether parking it on your street needs a permit.

Models for Paradise Valley lots. The Pod Mini seats 1, the 4 Person Pod seats 4, and the XL Barrel seats 6 to 8. The Teton and Blackwood come fully built at regular price; the Teton in our photos is a customer install in Idaho. Every model is in the sauna collection.

Before you call: a short checklist

  • Photos: the spot, the way in from the street, and your electrical panel.
  • Size: how many people you want to seat; see the size guide.
  • Rules: your HOA, if you have one, and your city or county on zoning, setbacks, and permits. See the Permits and HOA guide.

Give it some shade on the west side if you can, keep it on a level base that drains after monsoon storms, and follow our cedar maintenance guide for exterior care.

Which sauna fits a small footprint in Paradise Valley?

The Pod Mini seats 1, and the 2 Person Pod and 2 Person Barrel seat 2. Roofed area counts toward the Town's floor area total, so check the footprint on the product page and confirm your numbers with the Town.

Does a sloped Paradise Valley lot need extra review for a sauna?
