Handmade Outdoor Saunas in California

Short answer: you can buy a handmade outdoor sauna for your California property directly from Blazin Saunas. A team of six builds each one for your order in Idaho Falls, East Idaho, and we ship it to you. Pods, barrels, cubes, and the Timberline ship free in the contiguous U.S.; the Teton and Blackwood come fully built.

In California, permits and heater rules are local questions. Here is what to check before you order.

Sierra snow, coastal fog, valley and desert heat

California is really four climates. Truckee and the Sierra get deep snow and cold nights, San Francisco stays cool and foggy in summer with almost no frost, and Sacramento and the desert around Palm Springs have long, very hot summers.

  • Tahoe and the high Sierra: keep a shoveled path and clear the roof after big storms. See Cold-climate saunas.
  • The coast: fog and damp air mean airflow matters. Leave the door cracked after a session and follow our cedar sauna maintenance routine.
  • Valley and desert: strong sun is hard on any exterior wood finish. A shaded spot and a level, well-drained base help; see Foundation and electrical.

What every sauna is built from

Sugi cedar, 1 5/8" walls, and stainless steel screws, with no glue in the cabin joinery and no off-gassing plastics in the structure. Read more in Sugi cedar outdoor saunas and Clean build, no glue.

Heat: electric for most metro areas

For California installs, start with an electric heater. Ask us about your local rules before you pick any other heat source. Gas and propane heaters are available by request: call, text or message us to set it up. Our pods, cubes, 2 Person Barrel, XL Barrel, and Timberline list 175 to 230°F for the included heater.

  • Electric is the practical choice for most city and suburban lots. Plan a dedicated circuit with a licensed electrician, and ask your building department about an electrical permit.
  • Gas and propane: Gas and propane heaters are available by request: call, text or message us to set it up. Ask your building department about permits for gas piping.
  • Wood-burning: We do not claim any wood-burning heater is approved or compliant in California. Prefer electric heat, and ask us about your local rules.

Wood-burning rules vary by area. Treat that as a reason to check local rules, not as permission to choose wood. More on electric options: Electric vs wood-burning heaters.

Permits: start with your city or county

Rules for backyard structures differ by city and county. A heated sauna may not count as a storage shed, and any shed exemption may not reach zoning, setbacks, or electrical and gas work.

Size, height, and setback limits for accessory structures vary by city and county.

Check local rules: confirm permits, zoning, and setbacks with your city or county, and HOA approval if you have one, before you order. Our Permits and HOA guide has a checklist.

Site questions to settle first
