On the Plains, the sky is big and so is the wind. These notes cover cold, wind, and rural delivery.

Cold in the north, wind everywhere

The snow total climbs fast as you head north. Bismarck and Sioux Falls get the most, Omaha less, and Wichita the least, and winters across the region are cold and windy.

  • Use a windbreak. A house wall, shelterbelt, or fence on the windward side cuts drifting at the door and makes the walk out more pleasant in January.
  • Face the door away from the drift line when the site allows, and keep a shovel handy. See Cold-climate saunas and the winter prep guide.
  • Ask about loads. Your county or city building office can tell you the snow and wind loads for your site. Blazin does not publish snow-load ratings or R-values.

Permits in town and out in the county

If you live outside city limits, start with the county about zoning and any building permits. Inside town, the city building office is the place to start. Either way, an electric heater usually means an electrical permit question, and a licensed electrician should do the hookup.

Before you order, ask the city or county that covers your address about permits, zoning, and setbacks, and check any HOA covenants. Rural acreages can still have covenants, so read your deed. More: Permits and HOA guide.

Wood, electric, or both

For wood heat, we offer wood-burning heaters on the Timberline, the 4 Person and XL Barrels, the Teton, and the Blackwood (the 6 Person Cube on request), electric heaters across the line, and dual-heater builds with both. Still, rules vary across Plains cities and counties, so check your local rules and ask us first. Check your local rules, and ask us before choosing wood. Gas and propane heaters are available by request: call, text or message us to set it up. Electric is the simpler start for a town lot.

Our pods, cubes, 2 Person Barrel, XL Barrel, and Timberline list 175-230°F for the included heater. Heater help: Electric vs wood-burning · Wood vs electric in a cold climate.

Models for farms, acreages, and town lots

Our kits use 1 5/8" Sugi cedar and stainless screws, no glue. Teton and Blackwood interiors come in Sugi cedar, Thermo Spruce, or Thermo Aspen, with siding chosen per build. Pods, barrels, cubes, and the Timberline are $1,250 off regular price until we are booked up, while the Teton and Blackwood are regular price. Compare: Barrel vs pod vs cube · Teton vs Blackwood.
