Kentucky and West Virginia get all four seasons: humid summers, colorful falls, and cold winters that bring more snow the higher you live. Much of the land is hills and hollows, so the site often takes more planning than the sauna. Tennessee is on our Southeast page, and Virginia is on our Mid-Atlantic page.

Finding a level spot in hill country

A sauna needs a level, well-drained base, and on a hillside that usually means building one: a pad cut into the slope, a gravel base, or a platform. Decide where it goes before you order, and make sure you can walk to it safely in every season. Keep runoff from the hill above from flowing toward the sauna, and aim downspouts away from it. Ask your local office what it takes to build a base on your slope. Planning help: Foundation and electrical.

Four seasons of care

  • Summer: give the cedar air on every side and some afternoon shade, and leave the door open a bit after a session so the inside dries.
  • Fall: sweep leaves off the roof and away from the base before they pile up and stay wet.
  • Winter: brush snow off the roof, keep the path to the door clear, and leave the sauna ready for a cold evening. Heat-up is 30 to 60 minutes depending on size. See Cold-climate saunas.
  • Spring: check that the base still drains after the thaw and the spring rains. Finish care: Cedar sauna maintenance.

Heater choice for town and hollow

For a house in town or the suburbs, we suggest starting with an electric heater on a circuit run by a licensed electrician. On a remote property where power is hard to bring out, a wood-burning heater may come up, and the Blackwood, Teton, Timberline, XL Barrel, and 4 Person Barrel can take one (the 6 Person Cube on request); we also build with both wood and electric. Smoke and burning rules vary by county and city, so treat electric as the default, and if you want wood, check your local rules and ask us first. Gas and propane heaters are available by request: call, text or message us to set it up. Inside, our pods, Pod Mini, cubes, 2 Person Barrel, XL Barrel, and Timberline list 175-230°F for the included heater. Compare: Electric vs wood-burning · Heater sizing.

Check local rules before you buy

The city or county that covers your address decides what a backyard sauna needs. Check your local rules on zoning, setbacks, permits, and the electrical work, and if you have an HOA or deed covenants, read them and get approval in writing. Our Permits and HOA guide lists the questions to ask.

Choosing a model

The kits are built with 1 5/8" Sugi cedar walls and stainless steel screws, and the joinery is glue-free. As for the Teton and Blackwood, they are insulated cabins, finished inside in Sugi cedar, Thermo Spruce, or Thermo Aspen, with the siding picked for each build. Pods, barrels, cubes, and the Timberline are $1,250 off regular price until we are booked up; the Teton and Blackwood are regular price. Compare: Barrel vs pod vs cube · Size guide.

Shipping and assembly

Kits take about 4-5 weeks to build, then 5-10 business days in transit, and they ship free to Kentucky and West Virginia. Most customers assemble it themselves; a helper makes the day easier. Professional assembly for pods, barrels, cubes, and the Timberline is optional at $1,250 from our nationwide assembly team, separate from the sale. The Teton and Blackwood arrive fully built, so there is nothing to assemble; shipping is quoted by location and whether a crane is needed, and lead time is confirmed with your quote. On the call, describe your driveway and the route from the road to the base so we can plan delivery. More: Delivery and lead times · Assembly.

Placing your order

We plan orders by phone instead of visiting. Photos of the site, the way in, and your electrical panel help us suggest the right model. Pay in full, spread payments with Affirm, or use HSA/FSA funds if you may qualify through TrueMed. The 3-year limited warranty covers home, rental, and commercial use, including saunas bought through an authorized dealer. All sales are final. Each sauna is handmade for your order in East Idaho. Defects are covered by our 3-year warranty. Cabin rentals, gyms, and spas can schedule a call about dealer and wholesale pricing.
