How Much Does an Outdoor Sauna Really Cost in Idaho? (2026 Installed-Price Breakdown)

By Blazin Saunas June 13, 2026 7 min read

The advertised kit price is only 60–75% of what you'll actually spend. Here's the real all-in cost of a fully installed outdoor sauna in eastern Idaho in 2026: foundation, electrical, delivery, and assembly included.

If you're pricing out an outdoor sauna for your Idaho Falls backyard, you've probably noticed the numbers are all over the map: one site says $4,000, another says $25,000. Both are right, and neither tells you what you'll actually spend. The advertised kit price is only part of the story. Here's a straight breakdown of what goes into an outdoor sauna project in East Idaho in 2026, including the site-prep line items most national price guides leave out.

The short answer

Current prices for every model are on each product page; our outdoor sauna cost guide covers the rest of the budget. Your total also depends on your pad, your electrical run, and whether you add $1,250 professional assembly (pods, barrels, cubes, and Timberline).

The single most important thing to understand: the sauna price is not the whole budget. The rest is foundation, electrical, delivery, and assembly, and in a cold climate like ours, those costs run higher than the national average. Let's break down why.

What the kit price hides

The listed price is the sauna itself. Pods, barrels, cubes, and Timberline ship free to the contiguous U.S. (Hawaii and Alaska shipping is quoted), with optional $1,250 professional assembly. Teton and Blackwood arrive fully built, with shipping quoted by location and crane needs. It is not a finished, ready-to-use sauna in your backyard. Four more cost categories stand between that box and your first steam session.

Cost 1: The foundation pad

An outdoor sauna needs a level, well-drained base that won't shift when the ground freezes and thaws, which, in eastern Idaho, it will, repeatedly, every winter. Your options:

  • Compacted gravel bed: The most common and budget-friendly choice; drains well and handles frost movement gracefully.
  • Paver pad: A clean, finished look that doubles as a small patio.
  • Concrete slab with frost footings: The most permanent and a good option for heavier cabin saunas, but you're paying for excavation below our frost line.

This is the line item homeowners most often forget. A barrel sauna needs a level pad extending at least two feet beyond the footprint on every side, and "level" means within about half an inch across the whole base. Eyeballing it doesn't cut it.

Cost 2: Electrical (the budget surprise)

Most traditional outdoor sauna heaters need a dedicated 240V circuit, and getting power from your panel to a detached structure in the backyard is where budgets get a jolt. Plan on a licensed electrician to run a weatherproof, GFCI-protected line; the cost depends on the distance from your panel and whether the run needs trenching.

Two eastern-Idaho realities to plan around: trenching is harder (and pricier) in rocky soil, and you generally want that trench dug before the ground freezes. If you're buying in fall, get the electrical scheduled early.

Cost 3: Delivery

Outdoor saunas ship as heavy freight. Curbside delivery is often included in the kit price, but "curbside" is the key word: the freight company drops it at the end of your driveway, not in your backyard. Moving a barrel sauna to its final spot takes two to four people, and if access is tight or the unit is large, you may need to budget for local help or equipment. Teton and Blackwood arrive fully built, with shipping quoted by location and crane needs.

Cost 4: Assembly and installation

A barrel sauna kit can be assembled in a few hours by a couple of handy people; a cabin sauna takes longer. If you'd rather not spend a weekend with an Allen key, or you want it done right the first time on a structure you'll use for 15 years, Blazin professional assembly is $1,250 on pods, barrels, cubes, and Timberline. Teton and Blackwood arrive fully built, so there is nothing to assemble.

Barrel vs. cabin: how shape drives cost

The style you choose sets your starting point:

  • Barrel saunas: the most cost-effective outdoor option. See current barrel pricing on each product page; the curved design sheds snow well. Good value for most backyards.
  • Cabin saunas: more interior space, better insulation, and stronger heat retention in deep cold, which matters in an Idaho January. Expect to pay more for the structure and a heavier foundation.

We cover this trade-off in depth in our custom sauna builds page, worth a read if you're still deciding on type.

What about ongoing costs?

Once installed, upkeep is simple. Budget for periodic staining or sealing of the exterior wood to stand up to our weather, plus an occasional batch of heater stones.

Total cost of ownership: how to add it up

Add up four lines: the sauna (see current pricing on each product page), your pad, your electrical run, and, if you want it, $1,250 professional assembly for pods, barrels, cubes, and Timberline. Teton and Blackwood arrive fully built, with shipping quoted by location and crane needs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a $5,000 outdoor sauna any good?

Check current pricing on our product pages, and remember to budget for your pad and electrical on top of the sauna. A $5,000 sauna can absolutely be a good sauna; just make sure you've budgeted for the installation costs on top of it.

Do I need a permit for an outdoor sauna in Idaho Falls?

It depends on your city or county, the structure, and the electrical work. Rules and setbacks from property lines vary, so confirm with your local jurisdiction before you build, and have a licensed electrician handle the 240V hookup.

What upkeep does an outdoor sauna need?

Mostly exterior wood care to handle our weather, plus an occasional batch of heater stones.

How long from order to first sauna session?

Pods, barrels, cubes, and Timberline typically take 4–5 weeks from order, then 5–10 business days in transit; Teton and Blackwood lead time is confirmed with your quote. Run your pad and electrical prep in parallel so the site is ready when the sauna arrives. Buying in late summer or early fall is smart if you want it ready before the cold sets in.

Is there a sale right now?

Yes. Pods, barrels, cubes, and the Timberline are $1,250 off the regular price until we are booked up. The Teton and Blackwood are at regular price. Current prices are on each product page.

What do Blazin saunas start at?

Our product pages list the Pod Mini from $3,795, the 2 Person Barrel from $5,445, the 4 Person Barrel from $6,545, the XL Barrel from $7,045 without a heater, the Timberline from $8,245, the Teton from $18,095, and the Blackwood from $30,995. Prices change, so confirm on the product page.

Can I pay over time?

Affirm offers monthly payments at checkout, and you can use HSA or FSA funds through TrueMed, where your purchase may qualify. A Letter of Medical Necessity may be required, and TrueMed decides eligibility at checkout.

Know your full budget before you order

The advertised kit price is the easy number to find and the least useful one for budgeting. The number that matters is the full project cost for your yard, your soil, and your distance to the panel. Blazin Saunas builds traditional saunas by hand in East Idaho from Sugi cedar (Teton and Blackwood interiors are also offered in Thermo Spruce or Thermo Aspen), and every sauna is customizable. Pods, barrels, cubes, and Timberline ship free to the contiguous U.S. (Hawaii and Alaska shipping is quoted), with optional $1,250 professional assembly. Teton and Blackwood arrive fully built, with shipping quoted by location and crane needs. Right now, pods, barrels, cubes, and Timberline are $1,250 off the regular price until we are booked up (Teton and Blackwood are at regular price).
