A sauna and a cold plunge make a natural pair in an eastern Idaho backyard: heat on one side, cold a few steps away, and somewhere to sit in between. Alternating the two is often called contrast therapy. If you're pricing out a sauna and cold plunge setup for your yard, here's the honest picture: what the sauna side costs, what to budget for the plunge and the site, how to lay it out, and how long it takes to get going.
What a backyard sauna + cold plunge setup costs in Idaho (2026)
Your total depends on the sauna you choose, the plunge you pair it with, and your site prep. The sauna is the part with a fixed price; the rest depends on your yard and the plunge you pick, so get local quotes for those.
| Piece | What drives the cost | Where to price it |
|---|---|---|
| Sauna | Model, size, and heater | Blazin from-prices (product pages, October 5, 2026): 2 Person Barrel $5,445, 4 Person Barrel $6,545, 4 Person Cube $6,945, Timberline from $8,245. Kits are $1,250 off the regular price until we are booked up. |
| Cold plunge | Tub size, insulation, and whether it has a chiller | Quotes from plunge sellers |
| Site and power | Base (gravel, pad, or deck), the electrical run, and any decking between the two | Local contractor and licensed electrician quotes |
Prices change, so confirm on the product page. For a line-item breakdown of the sauna side, see our outdoor sauna cost guide for Idaho and the outdoor sauna cost by model.
What contrast therapy actually is
Contrast therapy alternates heat (the sauna) with cold (the plunge), with rest in between. People do it because they enjoy it: the warm-up, the cold shock, and the quiet afterward. We make no health or medical claims. If you have a health condition, are pregnant, or take medication, ask your doctor before using a sauna or a cold plunge. What research has and hasn't shown about sauna use is summarized on our sauna health page, and the basics of a session are in how to use an outdoor sauna.
Whatever routine you settle on, the two pieces belong close together in the yard, not in separate corners. The walk between them should be short.
The three-zone backyard layout
The setups that work well are built around three zones:
- Heat zone: your sauna. Blazin builds traditional saunas: pods, barrels, cubes, the Timberline, and the fully built Teton and Blackwood.
- Cold zone: a cold plunge tub or small in-ground plunge, placed a few steps away.
- Recovery zone: a bench, chairs, or a covered spot to rest between rounds. This is the part people forget, and it's what makes the routine stick.
Non-slip composite or cedar decking ties the zones together, and privacy screening or landscaping keeps it comfortable year-round. Start with the sauna's exterior size on its product page or in our size guide, then add room for the plunge, a path, and a place to sit. Still choosing a sauna? Cold plunge options in a cold climate
Cold plunges come in two flavors: chilled (a built-in chiller holds the water at your target temperature year-round) and no-chiller (you rely on the weather and ice). In eastern Idaho's colder months, a no-chiller tub stays cold with less effort; in summer you'll be adding ice or wishing you had a chiller. If you want the same plunge temperature every day of the year, a chiller is the simpler choice. Either way, plan for freezing nights: a plunge or water line left outside needs a winter plan.
Idaho-specific build notes
- Freeze protection. Any plumbed plunge or water line needs proper freeze protection for our winters. This is where DIY setups get expensive fast.
- Foundation. A gravel pad works for many barrel saunas; heavier cabins and in-ground plunges want a proper footing that won't heave with frost. More in our foundation and electrical guide.
- One electrical plan. A traditional electric sauna heater needs a dedicated 240V circuit, and a chiller draws power too. Have your licensed electrician plan both loads up front; it's cheaper than adding the second one later. Prefer to skip the heater circuit? The 4 Person Barrel, XL Barrel, and Timberline offer the Harvia M3 wood-burning stove, and the Teton and Blackwood can also be built with wood heat, and wood heat on the 6 Person Cube is available on request (ask us). Check your local rules.
- Access. Check gates, slopes, and soft ground on the path to the backyard. Pods, barrels, cubes, and Timberline are assembled on site; Teton and Blackwood arrive fully built and may need a crane. We go over this on your phone consultation so there are no surprises.
How long it takes to get started
Pods, barrels, cubes, and Timberline take about 4–5 weeks to build, then 5–10 business days in transit; Teton and Blackwood lead time is confirmed with your quote. Site prep and electrical can happen while your sauna is being built, so book the electrician and prep the base as soon as you order. Kits are $1,250 off the regular price until we are booked up. Frequently asked questions
How much does a sauna and cold plunge cost together in Idaho?
Start with the sauna. For example, the product pages list the 2 Person Barrel from $5,445, the 4 Person Barrel from $6,545, and the 4 Person Cube from $6,945 (October 5, 2026). Then add the plunge you choose and local quotes for the base and electrical. The biggest swing factors are the sauna model and whether your plunge has a chiller.
Do I need a chiller for a cold plunge in Idaho?
Not necessarily. In the colder months a no-chiller plunge stays cold with less effort; in summer you'll need ice or a chiller. If you want the same temperature every day year-round, a chiller is worth it. It comes down to how you plan to use it.
Can I run the sauna and cold plunge on one electrical circuit?
That's a question for your licensed electrician. A traditional electric sauna heater needs a dedicated 240V circuit, and a chiller needs power too, so plan both loads together before any work starts.
How much space do I need?
Start with your sauna's exterior size on its product page or in our size guide, then add room for the plunge, a short path between them, and a place to rest.
