Handmade Outdoor Saunas for Sun Valley and the Wood River Valley

Short answer: yes. Our shop in East Idaho builds cedar saunas by hand and ships them over to Sun Valley, Ketchum, Hailey, Bellevue and the rest of Blaine County. The Wood River Valley is one of the snowiest and coldest places we send saunas, so this page sticks to what that means on your lot: roof load, freeze, tight mountain roads, fire season and who to call for a permit. The Idaho page covers the rest of the state.

Ketchum and Bellevue climate normals

Two NOAA stations bracket the valley. The Ketchum Ranger Station sits near 5,890 feet at the north end; Bellevue, around 5,190 feet, is the closest normals station to Hailey. Figures below are 1991–2020 monthly normals from NOAA NCEI (°F; snowfall in inches).

Month Ketchum RS low Ketchum RS high Ketchum RS snowfall Bellevue low Bellevue high
November 17.4 41.2 10.3 24.8 44.8
December 9.2 30.3 32.0 16.5 34.2
January 8.0 31.3 27.0 15.9 34.9
February 11.1 35.0 17.2 19.2 37.7
March 18.7 42.6 10.5 27.1 48.0

Stations: Ketchum RS (USC00104845) and Bellevue (USC00100774); Bellevue does not publish a snowfall normal. Source: NOAA U.S. Climate Normals, retrieved October 2026. Ketchum totals about 97 inches of snow from November through March, and January nights there average close to eight degrees colder than in Bellevue.

Winter sessions in the Wood River Valley

December and January are the core of the season. Ketchum RS normal highs are 30.3°F and 31.3°F in those months, with lows of 9.2°F and 8.0°F, and December is the wettest month there at 2.57 inches of precipitation. Bellevue runs warmer at night, with January lows near 15.9°F. Cold that steady rewards a short, cleared walk from the back door, a covered landing to stamp off snow, and a towel rack inside rather than out. Spring is muddy as the snow melts, so set stepping pavers before the first winter.

Roof load and snow shedding

Blaine County publishes roof snow loads by area on its snow load FAQ: 65 psf from Picabo to south of Bellevue, 100 psf from north of Bellevue to south of Ketchum, 110 psf west of Ketchum to the end of platted Lower Board Ranch (125 beyond it), 125 psf north of Ketchum to North Fork, and 150 psf from North Fork to Smiley Creek. The City of Ketchum's planning and building page says buildings permitted there since April 1, 1974 were required to be designed for 100 psf, and that snow you shovel off a roof has to stay on your own property or be hauled away.

  • Set the sauna where your house roof will not dump onto it, and leave room on your own lot to pile what you brush off.
  • The County FAQ also warns that snow sliding off roofs is a hazard to people and pets. Keep the path to the sauna door clear of eave lines.
  • Ask the County or City whether your sauna's roof must meet the posted load for your area before you order, since they decide that, not us.

Freeze, frost and a dry base

Blaine County's permit resource sheet sets footings at least 32 inches below grade. Most of our saunas rest on a level pad of compacted gravel, pavers or concrete, or on a deck. Ask the County whether your pad needs a frost footing. Either way, slope the ground away so spring melt drains instead of freezing under the floor.

Narrow roads, steep drives and HOAs

Lots up Warm Springs, Elkhorn, Board Ranch or the Croy Creek side often come with steep, plowed-in drives. Kits have a 4–5 week lead time, then 5–10 business days in transit. Kits can be carried in by you or a helper. The County sheet also lists a road access permit from Road and Bridge for some sites, so ask the County whether yours needs one. If your subdivision has an HOA, check its covenants on color, height and placement first.

How each model arrives: a kit (pod, barrel, cube or Timberline) rides free to any address in the lower 48 states, and owners usually build it; professional assembly can be added. The Teton, Blackwood, and Timberline Lux arrive fully built, with shipping quoted (crane placement included) and lead time confirmed with the quote. Winter roads here bring plow berms, small bridges and wires overhead, so mention them, and ask the City or County whether setting the sauna by crane needs a road or right-of-way permit. Hawaii and Alaska are quoted as well.

Who issues permits

  • City of Sun Valley: Building Department, 208-622-4438 (city building page).
  • City of Ketchum: Planning and Building.
  • City of Hailey: Community Development, 208-788-9815 (building services).
  • Unincorporated Blaine County: Building Department, 208-788-5573. County code 9-29B-1 exempts only small non-habitable sheds (120 sq ft, 12 ft tall), so ask the County about a heated sauna.

In unincorporated Blaine County, electrical permits come from the State of Idaho electrical inspector, per the County resource sheet. Our permits and HOA guide lists the questions to bring.

Wood heat and fire restrictions

The Ketchum Fire District notes that when fire danger is high, restrictions may apply to every solid-fuel fire in any container, and it recommends gas fire pits over wood. That points most valley owners toward electric heat. Pods run on electric or gas only. Barrels, cubes, the Timberline, the Teton and the Blackwood can be built for wood, which helps on an off-grid cabin, but call your fire district before your first summer fire. Each product page lists its heater choices. Compare in electric vs wood heat.

Picking a size

A Pod Mini or 2 Person Barrel fits a condo patio in Ketchum. A 6 Person Cube or Timberline suits a family home in Hailey or the Sun Valley Elkhorn area. Pods, barrels, cubes and the Timberline carry a $1,250 discount at the moment; the Teton, Blackwood and Timberline Lux are regular price. The 3-year warranty covers every model. All sales are final, so we plan your site by phone first.

By town: in Ketchum, where snow cleared off a roof has to be stored on your property or hauled away, a small footprint like the Pod Mini (seats 1) or 2 Person Pod leaves room to pile snow; pods are electric or gas. In Hailey and Bellevue, larger lots suit the XL Barrel (6 to 8) or 4 Person Barrel, both of which can be built for wood heat. For a fully built cabin, compare the Teton and Blackwood, or browse the sauna collection. The photos here are customer installs elsewhere in Idaho: the Teton, an XL Barrel in Downey, and a 2 Person Pod in Boise.

Wood River Valley questions

How cold and snowy is Ketchum in winter?

At NOAA's Ketchum Ranger Station (USC00104845), the 1991–2020 January average low is 8.0°F and the December low is 9.2°F. Normal snowfall there is about 102 inches a year, with 32.0 inches in December and 27.0 in January.

What snow load should a sauna roof handle in the Wood River Valley?

Blaine County's posted roof snow loads run from 65 pounds per square foot south of Bellevue and 100 between Bellevue and Ketchum, to 110 to 125 around and north of Ketchum, and 150 from North Fork to Smiley Creek. Ketchum says it has required 100 pounds per square foot since 1974. Ask the City or County which figure applies to your lot.

Does a sauna need a building permit in Blaine County?

Blaine County code exempts only non-habitable detached structures up to 120 square feet and 12 feet tall, such as storage sheds. A heated sauna with wiring may not fit that, so ask Blaine County, or Ketchum, Sun Valley or Hailey if you are inside city limits, before you set it. In unincorporated Blaine County, electrical permits come from the State of Idaho electrical inspector.

Can I burn wood in a sauna during Wood River fire season?

Pods are electric or gas only. Barrels, cubes, the Timberline, the Teton and the Blackwood can be ordered with wood heat. The Ketchum Fire District notes that during high fire danger, restrictions may apply to all solid fuel fires, so check current restrictions with your fire district before lighting a wood stove.

How does a sauna reach a lot up Warm Springs or Elkhorn?

Pods, barrels, cubes and the Timberline arrive as kits with free shipping in the lower 48 states, so the parts can be carried up steep drives. The Teton, Blackwood and Timberline Lux arrive fully built, so their shipping and lead time are quoted once we see your road and set spot.

Which sauna fits a Ketchum condo or small lot?

The Pod Mini seats 1, and the 2 Person Pod and 2 Person Barrel seat 2. Ketchum says snow removed from a roof must be stored on your property or hauled away, so leave room around the sauna and ask the City about placement.

What does it cost to ship a Teton or Blackwood to Sun Valley?

Both arrive fully built, so shipping is quoted by location and crane needs once we see photos of your road, drive and set spot. Call (208) 520-6612 or (208) 270-5860.

Do I need a separate electrical permit for a sauna in Hailey or Ketchum?

Ask the City. Hailey's Community Development office and Ketchum's Planning and Building department can tell you which electrical permit a new heater circuit needs. In unincorporated Blaine County, electrical permits come from the State of Idaho electrical inspector.
