Short answer: yes. We hand-build cedar saunas in East Idaho and send them to Park City, Kamas, Heber City and Midway homes. This page is about what a Wasatch Back lot asks of a sauna: deep cold, heavy snow on the roof, slopes, wildfire code and HOA design review. For statewide notes, our Utah page has the overview.
Wasatch Back cold, by the numbers
We pulled 1991–2020 monthly normals from NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information for the four stations closest to the towns this page serves. Temperatures are in °F; snowfall is the normal monthly total in inches. Stations marked "not published" do not report a snowfall normal.
| Station (NOAA ID) | Elev. | Dec low | Jan low | Feb low | Jan snow | Yearly snow |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Park City (USC00426644) | 6,900 ft | 16.1 | 15.6 | 16.9 | not published | not published |
| Heber (USC00423809) | 5,590 ft | 14.1 | 12.5 | 15.8 | 21.5 in | 75.0 in |
| Snake Creek Powerhouse, near Midway (USC00427909) | 6,010 ft | 14.6 | 14.0 | 14.6 | not published | not published |

Source: NOAA U.S. Climate Normals, monthly product, retrieved October 2026. Heber also averages snow on the ground for 23.9 days of a normal January. Valley floors in the Heber area often run colder at night than the Park City station sitting higher up, because cold air drains and pools on flat ground, so a Midway pasture lot may see lower numbers than a Park Meadows yard.
Using a sauna through a Wasatch Back winter
Snow does not just fall here, it stays. In a normal year the Heber station logs snow at least an inch deep on 18.1 days in December, 23.9 in January and 20.5 in February; Wanship Dam logs 21.7, 25.1 and 19.5. Daytime highs at the Park City station stay near 33°F from December through January. For winter use, that means a shoveled, sanded path to the door, a boot mat or bench inside the entry, and a spot under cover for towels. If you plan cold plunges between rounds, keep the plunge on the same cleared path.
What the snow does to a sauna roof
Park City's posted design criteria do not print one ground snow load for the whole city. They send residential projects to the Utah State University snow load map, and Heber City's design criteria sheet does the same. Your exact number depends on elevation and position, so look up your parcel there before you pick a site.
- Clearing: Brush heavy snow off any sauna roof after a big storm, and keep the door out of the drop zone of your house roof.
- Neighbor lots: Park City's submittal requirements list Snow Shed Agreements where they apply; on a tight Old Town or Prospector lot, ask the City if yours needs one.
- Freeze and frost: Heber City lists a 36 inch frost line. A sauna sits on a level pad or deck rather than a frost footing in most cases, but ask the City or County what your base needs, and keep gravel or decking drained so meltwater does not freeze under the floor.

Steep lots, private roads and resort HOAs
Plenty of Wasatch Back homes sit on switchback drives, gated roads or ski-in lots where a delivery truck cannot reach the yard. Kit models ship as panels that can be walked to a deck no truck could reach. Kits have a 4–5 week lead time, then 5–10 business days on the road. Send us pictures of the approach.
Many communities around Deer Valley, the Canyons side, Promontory, Victory Ranch and Red Ledges run their own architectural review. We have not read those documents, so check your CC&Rs for exterior color, roof, height and setback rules and get the HOA's sign-off in writing before you order. Wasatch County's permit checklist also asks for a slope analysis where the plat calls for one, which is worth knowing on steep county parcels.
Delivery by model:
- Kit models (pods, barrels, cubes, Timberline): panels that ship free in the lower 48 states; most buyers put them together on their own, with paid professional assembly available.
- Fully built models: The Teton, Blackwood, and Timberline Lux arrive fully built, with shipping quoted (crane placement included) and lead time confirmed with the quote. On a switchback drive, the lift depends on where the truck can park and on overhead lines; ask the City or County whether a street closure or right-of-way permit applies.
- Outside the lower 48: Hawaii and Alaska addresses get a quote for any model.
Permits: who to ask
- Park City (Summit County): the City building page says a permit is needed unless the work is exempt under IBC or IRC 105.2. Building counter: 435-615-5101.
- Unincorporated Summit County (Kamas Valley, Snyderville Basin outside city limits): ask the County building department.
- Heber City and Midway: each has its own building office; Midway's permits page links its snow load and design criteria.
- Unincorporated Wasatch County: apply through the County building permit page.
Do not assume a shed exemption covers a heated, wired sauna; ask the City or County before you pour a pad. Our permits and HOA guide has a question list.
Heat source in fire country
Summer in the Wasatch Back brings wildfire season, and Park City runs a Wildland Urban Interface review on new construction (see the building plan review page). Electric is the simplest fit for most lots: no spark, no ash, just a circuit from your panel. Pods run on electric or gas only. Barrels, cubes, the Timberline, the Teton and the Blackwood can be ordered with wood heat, which suits a cabin far from power, but check burn rules and seasonal restrictions with the City or County first. Heater options are listed on each product page. More in electric vs wood heat.
Models that suit mountain homes
A 2 Person Barrel or Pod Mini fits a small deck off a condo or townhome. Families who host after ski days tend to look at the 6 Person Cube or the Timberline. Pods, barrels, cubes and the Timberline are $1,250 off right now. The Teton, Blackwood and Timberline Lux sell at regular price. Every sauna has a 3-year warranty, and all sales are final, so we talk through the site with you before you buy.
By area: in Old Town or a Prospector condo, the Pod Mini (seats 1) or the 2 Person Pod fits a small deck, and pods run on electric or gas. In Kamas Valley or on a Heber or Midway acreage, the XL Barrel seats 6 to 8 and the 4 Person Barrel seats four; both can be built for wood heat where the County allows it. For a fully built cabin on a large lot, compare the Teton and Blackwood. Browse all models in the sauna collection. The Timberline, 4 Person Cube and 4 Person Barrel photos on this page are customer installs in Utah.

Park City and Heber questions
What are winter lows like in Park City and Heber?
NOAA 1991–2020 normals put the January average low at 15.6°F at the Park City station (USC00426644, about 6,900 ft) and 12.5°F at the Heber station (USC00423809). December and February lows at both sit in the teens.
How much snow should my sauna roof expect in the Heber Valley?
The Heber station averages about 75 inches of snowfall in a normal year, with 21.5 inches in January alone. Park City's building department points owners to the Utah State University ground snow load map for the design value at a given address, so look your lot up there and ask the City or County which number applies.
Do I need a permit for a backyard sauna in Park City, Heber City or Midway?
Park City requires a building permit unless the work is exempt under Section 105.2 of the IBC or IRC; call the building counter at 435-615-5101. Heber City and Midway are in Wasatch County and Park City is in Summit County, so ask the City or County that serves your address, and add a separate electrical permit question if you go electric.
Can I use a wood-burning sauna in a Park City wildfire area?
Pods are electric or gas only. Barrels, cubes, the Timberline, the Teton and the Blackwood can take a wood stove. Park City applies a Wildland Urban Interface code during plan review, and Wasatch County asks for a wildfire hazard form on sites inside the WUI, so ask the City or County, plus your HOA, before choosing wood.
How does a sauna get up a steep Deer Valley or Midway driveway?
Kit models (pods, barrels, cubes, Timberline) come as panels you carry in, which helps on steep or tight lots. The Teton, Blackwood and Timberline Lux arrive fully built, so we quote shipping and lead time after we see photos of your drive, turns and set spot.
How long does snow stay on the ground in the Heber Valley?
NOAA 1991–2020 normals for Heber (USC00423809) count about 23.9 January days with at least an inch of snow on the ground, and 18.1 in December. Wanship Dam (USC00429165) counts 25.1 in January. Plan a cleared path to the sauna door.
Which sauna fits a Park City condo deck?
The Pod Mini seats 1, and the 2 Person Pod and 2 Person Barrel seat 2. Pods run on electric or gas only. Check the footprint on the product page, then ask your HOA and the City about placement.
Are the Teton, Blackwood or Timberline Lux on sale?
No. Pods, barrels, cubes and the Timberline show $1,250 OFF on their product pages right now; the Teton, Blackwood and Timberline Lux are regular price, and their shipping is quoted. Call (208) 520-6612 or (208) 270-5860.
